USA Independence Day

Independence Day- A British Perspective

I've never quite understood Independence Day, I'm aware of it each year and i know a little about it, but being British its hard to know, or understand what it means to Americans. Here's my take on the US Independence from a British perspective.
Each year on 4th July, is celebrated by Americans everywhere to mark the day when their nation became independent and broke from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776. The 4th July is a national holiday in the US. This year it is the 236th celebration of Independence day. When I  think of Independence day, I think of a scene from The Great Escape, you can view the clip below. I view Independence day as a day of great patriotism for Americans, with great celebrations like in the clip below.
(Clip is only relevant from 0:08, its the only one i could find)

Is this perception of Independence day right? Is there anything I have missed? Comment below and tell me

Spurs Capture AVB

AVB Named Spurs Manager

Andre Villas Boas has been lured to Tottenham Hotspur on a 3 year deal. AVB (34) succeeds Harry Redknapp as Tottenham manager. The ex Chelsea boss faces some tough challenges in preparation for next season, such as putting an end to the Modric and Bale rumours who are thought to be wanting to leaving the club. Expectations are high for the new manager, fans expect nothing less than to qualify for Champions League next season. Is this what Tottenham fans want, many would argue Redknapp is a better manager than AVB, and understands the game better, Redknapp also has a proven record in the Premier League unlike AVB. What do you think? Do you think this is a match made in heaven, or a disaster waiting to happen?

AVB said said when interviewed about the appointment:

“Tottenham Hotspur is a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and throughout the world. I feel privileged to be its coach. For me, this is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League. I have had several discussions with the Chairman and the Board and I share their vision for the future progress of the Club. This is a squad any coach would love to work with and together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead."

ITV's Euro 2012 Disaster

ITV Audience Outrage

Now that the Euro 2012 football championship has finished, I'm looking at the television coverage and presentation of the broadcasters. In the UK, there were two channels broadcasting the Euros, they were the BBC and ITV, I will look at ITV.
ITV, like the BBC had good and bad aspects to their coverage. I thought ITV were poor in a number of areas. Firstly, the need for Ad breaks, is an advantage for the BBC, Ad breaks are bad enough however the ones in between the end of the national anthems and kick off are particularly bad as they ruin the atmosphere for all TV audiences. The next area I think ITV could have improved was in the choice of pundits. Adrian Chiles got his usual slating from the viewers, he was partnered by the steely Roy Keane, whose bad temperament got even worse when Ireland left the competition. Jamie Carragher represented the English contingent of the broadcasting team, he made valid contributions however i would question is the thick scouse accent suitable for TV? This represented a problem similar to Cheryl Cole's Geordie accent on the American X Factor. Roberto Martinez provided a Spanish perspective on the tournament, tactically understands the game very well but I would question his ability to convey this effectively to the TV audience. Gareth Southgate, was the stand out pundit for ITV, he was able to give clear concise summaries of games and understands the game well, I am surprised ITV didn't choose Southgate to appear for the final. Patrick Vieira enjoyed a spell as ITV pundit during the group stages, his relationship with his ITV colleague Roy Keane proved to be a talking point for many, who remembered their relationship with one another on the pitch.
I think ITV having their studio situated in Warsaw, unlike the BBC was good, you got a real atmosphere of the tournament from seeing fans from all over the world supporting their nation. Seeing the scenes in the host country helped promote a good image of the nation after the early negative image that was portrayed of Ukraine and Poland.

Rediscover the Lost Languages!

The Endangered Languages Project

The Endangered Languages project is run by the Alliance for Linguistic Diversity in collaboration with Google. The aim of the project is to preserve endangered languages throughout the world. Experts predict that only 50% of the languages spoken today will exist in they year 2100. The loss of languages will have a huge cultural and scientific impact so it is important to conserve these languages.
Check out the video below and click the link to the Endangered Languages website to find out more information.

Social Network Wars

IS TWITTER THE FUTURE?

Social networking has become almost essential especially to young people, it can be done through a variety of medium. The most popular by far is Facebook, however other sites such as Twitter and Google+ are proving to be popular.
Despite Facebook being the first real social network and its on-line membership of 901 million it appears to have grown stale, this has lead to increasing use of other social networking sites. Twitter has lead the way against fighting Facebook, it boasts a 500 million membership. Twitter gives users a much more interconnected social networking experience, their users aren't blocked in by privacy settings, they don't fall victim to cyber bulling by not being accepted as friends.
Twitter users are free to express their opinions to the world from the comfort of their own home, the trending articles (chosen by users based on popularity of key words) give people the topic of their opinion, quite often trending articles are about real life events. The re-tweet option allows you to share another users opinion which you share. Twitter also allows users to personally contact celebrities with Twitter accounts, celebrities can reply to these messages, I think this is a big reason for the growth of Twitter recently, celebrities can also promote events as they have large followings on Twitter. Twitter can prove to be influential for a celebrities PR, replying to people shows a human and caring side to a celebrity. Celebrities are able to contact other celebrities via Twitter, this can lead to healthy relationships between celebrities or "beef", beef is a slang term used to describe a problem or grudge between two people.
Fan accounts on Twitter, Twitter accounts dedicated to a celebrity or cult, are an area where I think Twitter could improve, whilst I think it is fair that people express their opinions about a topic many tweets from such fan groups are spam, they dominate the trending topics I think this is bad, examples of fan groups on twitter include Harry Potter, known as Potterheads and Justin Bieber known as Beliebers.
Automated accounts known as "bot" accounts post short tweets, not directed at anyone, they may tweet jokes or facts which other twitter users may find funny or interesting, they prove to be popular amongst Twitter users.
Another area where Twitter could improve is its photo sharing, this is an area where Facebook has the edge. I also think that Twitter could be improved by the sending of music files in a Tweet, instead of sending a link to a website with music such as YouTube, I think Twitter would benefit if music files could be played directly from a tweet, this would make the diversity of Twitter's on-line community greater.

Qlocktwo Watch

Qlocktwo Watch

QLOCKTWO WATCH

Hello everyone, In this post I'm going to talk about the a new watch concept called Qlocktwo. The Qlocktwo watch is from German watch designer Biegert & Funk (Click the link to visit their on-line store). The Qlocktwo watch is classy and sleek, it gives a modern take on the old age watch. Biegert & Funk also sells a wall and alarm clock identical in design, but on a larger scale. The concept of the watch is hard to explain in words so I've added a picture which I hope will help. As you can see the time is spelt out to you in  words instead of the conventional way of using numbers. The watch is 35mm x 35mm, I think this is a good size. The backing of the watch is stainless steel you can choose the colour, either black or brushed, (Brushed pictured). The watch also gives the user the calendar date as well as a seconds counter. The watch comes in multiple languages; English, German and French, I think this is impressive as the watch can accommodate foreign languages. The watch is available from Autumn 2012, although the price is unknown, but I expect it may cost a fair bit for this luxury brand and new  innovative technology. If your keen to get your hands on the Qlocktwo watch, you can sign up at the Biegert & Funk website for updates about the release of the Qlocktwo Watch.
